Weekend Eatin’: Nava, Bullfeathers

Brought friends for Friday dinner at Nava (11301 Fern), the first time we have had dinner there (as opposed to takeout or lunch) in quite a while. Despite having lots of tables these days, it was packed, we had to wait a half hour before sitting down.  Apparently Nava has become better known than I had realized.

Of course, the wait was worth it. I still can’t figure out why Nava’s pad thai is so much better than others, but it is. It really is worth ordering. Crispy pork with green beans = awesome. Duck curry was spicy and flavorful but too much pineapple and lychee for my taste; everyone else loved it. Hot and sour squid appetizer was a little overdone but still edible and tasty.  Service was superfriendly but slow; in their defense, they were slammed. They also took our bowls before the tom kha was finished, major foul!  We just dipped our spoons straight into the tureen, manners and H1N1 be damned.  Another fine Nava outing.

We also ate this weekend at Bullfeathers (410 1st Street), facilitated by a parking spot right across from Capitol South Metro. Unfortunately the food wasn’t as good as the parking, but I had never been to Bullfeathers so I didn’t mind. It’s all about the history, atmosphere, and maybe the drinks, although our beers were kind of flat.  Nachos were actually pretty good despite chips not as fresh as they could be; chili and beef sandwich were okay, fries a little bland. Won’t rush back anytime soon, but fun to visit a DC institution.

  1. By the way, when we were in Wheaton we had coffee and muffins at the coffee shop you suggested with your coupon. Service was very friendly (we were the only ones there on a wednesday morning til someone came in for takeout), decent coffee and I liked the muffin (but have relatively low standards: size counts, for example). The local wall art was interesting but way over priced (Mrs Senior Me is an expert you know).
